11th Annual Super Saturday Turkey Drive

Phoenix – The 100-degree temperatures are finally in Arizona’s rear-view mirror. This means it’s almost Turkey Time – and St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s Super Saturday is just around the corner!

 St. Mary’s will hold its 11th annual Super Saturday Turkey Drive, presented by Mobile Mini, on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Food Bank locations in Phoenix and Surprise as well as 28 Albertsons and Safeway locations around the Valley striving to meet the anticipated need for the 2017 holiday season.

The Food Bank distributed more than 12,000 Holiday Food Boxes in the three days leading up to Thanksgiving in 2016. Each year, hopes are that each will contain a turkey and other assorted holiday dinner items giving Arizona families the chance to enjoy the comforting tradition of a holiday meal.

In addition to helping reach the goal of 7,000 donated turkeys, St. Mary’s Food Bank staff and scores of volunteers will gladly accept any monetary or food donations (both perishable and non-perishable) on Super Saturday. All donors are invited to register for a chance to win a $500 Gift Card for Travel donated by American Airlines.

KSLX-FM's Mark Mayfield and Sleep America host 7th Annual Get In Bed With Mark food drive to benefit St. Mary's Food Bank

Three-day Radio-thon Kicks off Wednesday April 17 on KSLX 100.7 FM; Bed Race on March 19 Caps Event to Raise Awareness of Arizona’s Hungry

One of the Valley’s best-known radio personalities, KSLX (100.7 FM)’s morning man Mark Mayfield is preparing to climb back into his Sleep America bed for the Seventh Annual “Get in Bed with Mark” Food Drive, presented by Sleep America, to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

Over the first six years, KSLX and Sleep America have raised more than 770,000 meals for the hungry of Arizona, with the 2012 drive collecting a record 171,000 meals.

Mayfield will begin his three-day live marathon at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17 at Sleep America location at 20th Street and Camelback (1949 E. Camelback Rd., Suite 162) which will serve at the flagship location for the entire food drive. He will literally get into a Sleep America bed aboard a flat-bed truck outside the store, asking Valley listeners to contribute both non-perishable food items and cash donations to St. Mary’s while interviewing local celebrities, and even hosting live music performances.

For the second straight year, the food drive will expand to several Albertsons locations around the Valley, with different locations serving as satellite drive sites for food and cash donations. The following Albertsons markets will serve as collection sites for each day of the drive:

The drive will culminate on Friday, April 19 with a special appearance by Alice Cooper and the third annual Sleep America Great Bed Race to benefit the Food Bank outside the 20th Street and Camelback location. At the end of the drive, Sleep America President and Spokesperson Debbie Gaby will raffle off the queen size Kingsdown bed which will have served as Mayfield’s home for three days and more than 50 hours of radio.

KMLE Nation Listeners “Make a Donation before Vacation” and Raise 280,000 Meals for St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance

In just three days – in the dead of summer – Southwest Gas, Albertsons and the generous listeners of the KMLE Country 108 joined the morning team of Tim, Willy and Andrea to raise $40,000 and distribute more than 280,000 meals to the hungry of Arizona during the first annual “Make a Donation before Your Vacation” Food Drive from June 21-23.

US Airways put out the challenge to Valley companies to Send Hunger Packing this summer and Southwest Gas and Albertsons answered that call with matching donations of $10,000 to help make this drive a huge success. To all who donated – either by phone, internet or in person on Saturday at Albertsons locations manned by Tim, Willy and Andrea (Willy earns bragging right by collecting the most donations) we sincerely thank you for helping St. Mary’s at the most difficult time of the year.

Congratulations to Sharon Harbin of Peoria who took home the $750 US Airways travel voucher – she made and donation and now she gets to go on vacation! Tim & Willy are already plotting and planning for next year – we’ll see you then!

It’s one Valley institution helping another. Popular KMLE radio hosts Tim and Willy are hoping to help fill the shelves of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance during the summer months – when donations for the hungry decline while the demand for food spikes upward.

On June 21-22, the drive begins in-studio with Tim and Willy asking for donations to the Food Bank and interviewing special guests who are helping in the war against hunger.

Southwest Gas has stepped up and will make a matching gift to those who donate on Thursday, while everyone who donates will be eligible to win a $750 in flight voucher from US Airways.   So help the one in four children in Arizona who fight hunger every day. Eagle Scout Tanner Jensen Collects More Than 7,000 Bottles of Water for St. Mary’s Food Bank as Summer Heat Arrives

Forget what it says on the calendar. Just look at the thermometer and you know that summer has arrived in Arizona.

Water is a very precious commodity in our state and even more so to those who don’t have access to water – the homeless and those who have had to do without utilities in their homes.

Eagle Scout Troop 694 member and Willow Canyon High School student Tanner Jensen recognized a need in the community and dedicated his scout project to collecting as much water as he could for the homeless and others in his neighborhood. Tanner asked for donations from family, friends, fellow church members and local Food Bank friends like Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club, Fry’s, Safeway, and Albertsons, they all made significant donations to the cause.

On May 23, Tanner arrived at the St. Mary’s Food Bank warehouse in Surprise location with his donation. Nearly 300 cases of bottled water – more than 7,000 bottles in all. This is a fabulous donation and will give St. Mary’s a great head start on our goal of making sure that those in need in our community stay hydrated during this long hot summer.

In the last eight years, proceeds from the Albertson’s Kids Cafe Open have provided nearly half a million meals to children at risk of hunger, in addition to providing an enjoyable day of golf at the beautiful Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa (300 E. Wigwam Blvd) in Litchfield Park.

All golfers will be treated to lunch, beverages, goodie bags and tournament shirts. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, longest drive and accuracy, closest-to-the-pin and Hole-In-One.

But the big winners are the children of Arizona, many of whom would not know where their next meal would come from without programs from St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

The ninth annual event tees off Friday, April 16 and there are still spots open for both players ($200 per player or $800 per foursome) and sponsors at the Eagle ($10,000), Birdie ($5,000), Par ($2,000) and Tee ($1,000) levels. Cubs legend and Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins presented a check for $2,100 to St. Mary’s Development Officer Christina Calio during Monday’s baseball game at Mesa’s HohoKam Park. The money was raised for St. Mary’s and several other Valley Charities through the third annual “Fergie & Friends” Celebrity Baseball Game on Mar. 17. Jenkins also signed a baseball that will be part of the silent auction at the 9th annual Albertson’s Kids Cafe Open golf event at the Wigwam resort on Friday, April 16.
