To bring awareness to food insecurity among our military and veterans community, the Arizona VFW District, Humana and St. Mary’s Food Bank are hosting a Rucksack March at the Humana Arizona Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. The event will kick-off a two-month long Food Drive to bring awareness to the fact that 1 in 5 people served by a local food bank has someone in their family who is currently serving or has served in the military
The Rucksack March will take place as part of the Humana Arizona Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K event. The registration fee to participate is a food donation to St. Mary’s Food Bank. Participants will have three option to join:
1.) 5K Rucksack March: This will kick off at the 5K start line located at Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway at 8 a.m.
2.) 1K Mile Rucksack March: This will kick off at the last mile of the 5K. Location and time TBD.
3.) 5K Rucksack Relay: This will require two participants. One who will kick off at the 5K start and the other who will be waiting at the 1 mile start.
The finish line is at Rio Salado Parkway at Ash Avenue (Tempe Beach Park). Food barrels from St. Mary’s Food Bank will be staged at the finish line and participants will place the food from their rucksacks into the barrels to help create a visual about food insecurity in our military/veterans community.
Rucksack March Items:
At check-in, participants will receive a Bib and a Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Dri-Fit shirt.
At the finish, participants will receive a Medal.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own rucksacks (any backpack will do!).
The first 80 participants who sign up will receive a Humana-branded, camo drawstring bag!
Participants are asked to bring non-perishable food to help support the food drive.
Participants must sign a waiver. It will be shared by email the week of the event and will also be available on site to sign.
