Arizona letter carriers come together to help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’

The largest single-day food drive in the United States also happens to be one of the easiest to be a part of. All it takes is a quick trip to your mailbox.

On Saturday, May 10th, over 230,000 letter carriers nationwide, including over 5,000 here in the Valley will be picking up canned food donations on their regular mail routes during the 22nd Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive.

A drive that began right here in Phoenix in 1976 with letter carriers from NALC Branch 576 picking up food donations in their own pickup trucks has evolved into a national effort that has collected more than a billion pounds over the last two decades for Americans suffering from food insecurity. More than two million pounds was collected across Arizona in 2012.

Throughout the week leading up to the food drive, local letter carriers will be dropping off reminder post cards and special grocery bags to both city and rural residents’ mailboxes. The letter carriers encourage those who can help to fill the bags, or any other grocery bag, with nonperishable food items and leave them by their mailboxes on the morning of Saturday May 10th. Your letter carrier will do the rest, making sure the food gets to the one in five Arizonans – and one in four children – dealing with hunger issues in our state.

Dennis Kendrick from Cactus Station hands off to helper Karen LibertyArizona, and especially the Valley, is known for its intense summer heat. Food demand increases with children out of school, while donations dwindle with many residents escaping to cooler climates. With 28 percent of Arizona children living in poverty, and tough economic times challenging the community further, Arizona Food Banks rely on “Stamp Out Hunger” to provide that much-needed influx of food. St. Mary’s distributes more than 40,000 emergency food boxes each month, as well as providing food to the 300-plus agency partners it serves.

Items most needed by the food banks include canned fruit and vegetables, soups and meals in a can, pasta, peanut butter, tuna, rice and cereal.

Stamp Out Hunger with the National Association of Letter Carriers

On Saturday, May 11, 2013, Campbell Soup Company will join forces with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to help Stamp Out Hunger in Arizona. Now in its 21st year, the annual food drive has grown from a regional to a national effort that provides assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held on the second Saturday in May, has become the  largest single-day food drive benefiting St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

“We’re incredibly excited for the 21st year of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive,” said Fredric V. Rolando, NALC president. “We’re asking people across the country for their support to make this year the most successful in the drive’s history. It’s so easy to make a donation: simply leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox to help neighbors in need. That’s all it takes.”

To participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive in Arizona, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food items, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 11. Arizona’s letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and take them to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

Last Reminder to Clean Out Your Pantry and Help Stamp Out Hunger TOMORROW!!!!

Summer is almost here and St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance needs your help. Each summer, demand for our services increase while donations fall as folks leave town for cooler weather. And our supplies are ALREADY down almost 30 percent compared to last year.

Now is a great time to help! The National Association of Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food drive is TOMORROW, May 12th. All you have to do is leave a bag of food near the mailbox on Saturday morning and the letter carriers will do the rest. Do you have 6-7 cans in your pantry you can spare? How about a box of cereal or pasta? A jar or two of peanut butter?

This is a great time to clean out your pantry of unwanted items and help fill emergency food boxes for someone who can REALLY use it. The letter carriers will drop reminder cards and bags in your mailbox this week. You can help families in need without leaving your driveway. Please help by making your donation on SATURDAY, May 12.

Stamp Out Hunger Reminder from President and CEO, Terry Shannon

Hello Friends of the Food Bank:
The long, hot summer once again approaches and St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance is facing a difficult task. Our food reserves are down nearly 30 percent over this time last year.

Each summer, demand for food rises while donations tend to fall so we are very concerned about our ability to help all those in need. I am asking for your help – and there is an easy and convenient way to do that this weekend

The National Association of Letter Carriers will be conducting its 20th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive on Saturday May 12th – and the drive will be held at your house!

This is a great time to clean out your pantry at home and donate to without leaving your driveway. Simply fill a bag or bags (the letter carriers will even leave one in your mailbox in the days leading up to the drive) with your donation by your mailbox before your letter carrier makes his rounds on Saturday morning.

Your letter carrier will do the rest. It’s an easy and effective way to help neighbors in need.

St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance counts on this, the largest single-day food drive in the United States, to fill our emergency food boxes all summer. That is true more this year than ever. Please give what you can and remember to help Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday, May 12.

Sincerely,

Terry Shannon

President & CEO, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance
