APS Saves Trees and Feeds Arizona’s Hungry with Donation to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance

St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance has a special place in our heart for our “Hunger Heroes” – companies and organizations that donate food time and money to the mission of helping Arizona’s hungry.

And then there are committed companies like Arizona Public Service – that do all THREE in one day!

Before a group of APS volunteers headed into our Knight Client Services Center to help pack and distribute emergency food boxes on July 31, APS presented St. Mary’s President and CEO Beverly Damore with a check for $20,000 and 700 pounds of canned food collected during a company drive.

But how APS raised the donation money is a story in itself.  The company recently completed marketing campaign urged customers to sign up for online services at www.aps.com  such as registering their accounts online, opting for paperless billing and signing up for AutoPay. When customers signed up for these services, APS donated a dollar on their behalf.

It took just one month for APS to reach its $20,000 donation goal. In all, the marketing campaign, which ran from June through July 13, resulted in 5,045 new aps.com registrations, 12,388 new paperless enrollments and 3,345 new AutoPay enrollments.

“This promotion was a huge success,” said Donald Case, aps.com Web Manager. “We were able to increase the number of customers taking part in self-serve activities on aps.com, giving them all the convenience and benefits the site offers, while helping provide hundreds of thousands of meals for Arizonans in need.”

The donations of food and fund will allow St. Mary’s to distribute enough food to provide more than 140,000 meals to the community. And we really appreciate the APS employees who volunteered their time to help the nearly 1,000 families who came to the Knight Center for emergency food boxes today. APS has donated 400 volunteer hours to St. Mary’s in just the last few months!

On behalf of the hungry of Arizona … Thank you APS!

Scottsdale Insurance “Rally against Hunger” Drive Collects More Than 11,000 Pounds for St. Mary’s

During the summer months, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance leans on its “Hunger Heroes” to help the Food Bank get through the long hot summer with donations of food, time and funds during a time when all three are in short supply.

Scottsdale Insurance has been one of the guiding lights in the battle against hunger and in 2012 – the company’s 30th anniversary – President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Miller, Vice President of Claims and St. Mary’s Board of Directors Treasurer Susan Wain and their great crew of caring associates completed a trifecta of giving with incredible results.

After presenting St. Mary’s with a check for $55,000 in May, Scottsdale Insurance held a month-long “Rally for Hunger” Food Drive in July with the goal of collecting many of St. Mary’s most-needed, non-perishable food items. With a huge racetrack tote board in their lobby and every 40 items collected representing “a mile” on the road to victory, the goal of collecting “30 miles” of peanut butter, rice, cereals and bottled water was set.

Scottsdale Insurance employees not only reached the goal, they demolished it in less than three weeks. By the end of the month, 11,182 pounds of food and water filled the lobbies of their two office locations and was ready to be collected and placed in the more than 30,000 emergency food boxes St. Mary’s distributes each week.

All told, that means enough food and funds for St. Mary’s to distribute enough food for 396,182 meals to those in need. And Scottsdale Insurance employees, who will back up that donation with more than 1,000 hours of volunteer time this year, are frequent visitors to the St. Mary’s warehouse to donate their time and pack food boxes as well.

It’s an incredible outpouring of support and compassion, a commitment to the hungry of Arizona that makes Scottsdale Insurance a true Hunger Hero. To everyone who took part in this labor of love, a sincere and heartfelt thank you on behalf of the thousands who will benefit from this support.

US Airways Kicks Off “Send Childhood Hunger Packing” Challenge with Breakfast and Paper Plane Contest at Phoenix Youth At-Risk

Returning as the Jet Setter sponsor of “Send Childhood Hunger Packing” in 2012, US Airways has issued the challenge to individuals and companies around Arizona to help St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance — by donating fund, time and funds this summer.

Each year, US Airways earns “Hunger Hero” status with the Food Bank, providing hundreds of thousands of meals those in need. And with one in four Arizona children suffering from food insecurity, US Airways stands with St. Mary’s in the belief that “no child deserves to go to bed hungry” and challenges YOU to Send Childhood Hunger Packing” this summer.

On June 11 at Phoenix Youth At-Risk Community Center, US Airways “Do Crew” volunteers and mascots Larry Luggage and Carry On distributed breakfast to more than 40 children who receive two meals a day during the summer from St. Mary’s Kids Cafe Program. More than 3,000 kids are fed through the program each day at 47 sites around the Valley as St. Mary’s seeks to bridge the gap for so many families who are taxed to feed their children over the summer.

After a nutritious breakfast featuring pears, yogurt, cheese, granola bars and milk, the kids created their own US Airways paper airplanes with the help of Do Crew and St. Mary’s Kids Cafe personnel. Then it was out to the basketball court to put the planes through their paces in a distance contest, with the winners in each age group taking home a St. Mary’s Hunger 101 prize pack.

Now it’s your turn. Hold a company food drive. Volunteer with a church group to pack emergency food boxes. Allow the food bank to distribute seven meals with every dollar donated this summer. Help US Airways and St. Mary’s Food Bank “Send Childhood Hunger Packing” all year long.
