100-Ton Winds to a Successful Conclusion with Channel 15 Sonoran Living Cook-Off Segment

VIDEO HERE: ABC 15 Sonoran Living Cook-Off

With the Fry’s 100-Ton Food Drive now down to the final few days, our incredible Valley media partner, ABC 15, featured a cook-off between Fry’s President Jon Flora and “Sonoran Living” co-host Stephanie Sandoval. Using the ingredients commonly found in an emergency food  box distributed to those in need each day by St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and United Food Bank, the contestants whipped up delicious dishes that faced the judging pallets of Beverly Damore (Chief Operating Officer, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance) and Bob Evans (CEO United Food Bank).

The winner was…the hungry of Arizona, who will receive the benefit of this incredible month-long drive. And how much was raised? Was the 100-Ton goal reached? Stay tuned for the answers later in the week!

Fry's100-Ton Food Drive Begins 3rd Week Benefiting Arizona Food Banks

Fry’s Food Stores across Arizona report a great response the first week of the 100-Ton Food Drive, but we need your help over the final two weeks to help reach the goal of collecting 100 TONS (that’s 200,000 pounds) of food for the one in five Arizonans who need help putting food on the table for their families.

On Valentine’s Day, St. Mary’s Food Bank will host the ‘100-Ton Tuesday” activities at the Fry’s Food Store at Dobson and Ray Road all day until 6 p.m. Come by and enter raffles to win a wide-screen TV from ABC 15, and make a donation while you are picking up that gift for your special someone at the Fry’s Valentine’s headquarters tent in the parking lot. What better way to top off a day of giving then to donate 10 pounds of food to Arizona food banks for a one-dollar donation?

ABC 15 will be broadcasting live from 5-7 a.m. on Tuesday morning and from 3 to 6 p.m. in the afternoon. So come on out, take advantage of the great specials at Fry’s and save a can or two – or dollar or two –for those who really need it. If we all pull together, that 100-Ton number will pile up before leap day on Feb. 29.

ABC 15’s “Sonoran Living Live” Visits St. Mary’s to promote 100-Ton Food Drive

ABC 15’s “Sonoran Living Live” host Stephanie Sandoval visited St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s Knight Services Transportation Client Services Center on Feb. 7. She was here to talk about both the 45th Anniversary of the World’s First Food Bank and the 100-Ton Food Drive Fry’s Food Stores and ABC 15 are sponsoring to fill the shelves of Arizona food banks to help celebrate Arizona’s 100th anniversary.
Sandoval talked with St. Mary’s Chief Operating Officer Beverly Damore about how the hunger problem in Arizona and how important the 100-Ton Food drive is to Food Banks across the state. St. Mary’s Board of Directors member and Fry’s Zone 1 Operations Supervisor Nicki Schillhahn-Amos also talked about how all Fry’s shoppers have a chance to take part with donations of food or fund all during the month of February.
Check out the story on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, during “Sonoran Living Live” on ABC 15 beginning at 9 a.m.

Emergency Food Box Requests Skyrocket for Valley Food Banks

Many are wondering…is it just the working poor who need help? Not surprisingly, the answer is no.

With the ecomony like it is, many working-class Americans who have stretched their needs from paycheck to paycheck have felt the devestation. The emergency food boxes provided by St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and other food banks in the Valley are helping meet this need–but–at the rate the demand is requiring, without donations, we will have to turn people away.

That means people turning away couples, children with mothers and the elderly like I saw today in the lines to get boxes. People who held babies. People hiding from abusive ex-husbands. People too embarrased to tell their stories for an upcoming story on ABC 15 to talk about the state of our economy.

For those of you wondering about the status of St. Mary’s Food Bank, here is our update to report.

-St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance reports certain agencies we distribute to such as Phoenix Rescue Mission and Community Economic Development Alliance has seen a more than 100 percent increase in requests for Emergency Food Boxes.

We do not expect the increased demand trend to slow down anytime soon. The holidays are always challenging for those on fixed income and the working poor…. This holiday season is going to be significantly more difficult if current trends continue.

-St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance works with more than 700 agency locations in the Valley that rely upon the organization for emergency food supplies. The recent trend in demand to our Emergency Food Box program has increased more than 35 percent.

So far, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance has not turned anyone away without food but will only be able to maintain our distribution if donations are received.

-Currently, St. Mary’s Food Bank has offered support to St. Vincent DePaul to assist their emergency food box needs and is awaiting a response.

To help this need, the public can make donations year-round at any U-Haul or Goodwill store location or make a monetary donation using St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s Web site at www.FirstFoodBank.org. For those interested in food drive opportunities or to volunteer, call (602) 242-FOOD.

Operation Santa Claus

Brought to you by:  Cynde C.

Last week I attended a meeting to start planning for this year’s Operation Santa Claus and there are a lot of exciting things in store.

If you don’t know about Operation Santa Claus, it is a donation drive/event organized by Sanderson Ford in Glendale. In its eighth year, this event encourages the community to donate food and toys to brighten up the lives of those who are less fortunate. St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance is very lucky to be one of the organizations that benefits from this drive.

To spread the word across the Valley, Sanderson has brought on media partners ABC Channel 15 and Bonneville Radio (92.3 KTAR and 98.7 The Peak). Tim and Willy – troubadours and local personalities – will once again be involved in spreading awareness of the drive. In fact, one of their favorite charities, The Neighborhood Center, is also a beneficiary, along with West Valley Child Crisis Center and SARRC.

This year, Operation Santa Claus kicks off on November 20 and ends on December 20. Look for collection events at Westgate City Center, Snow Day at Desert Ridge, and at the KTAR Christmas Carol Live Performance.

The best part – okay, outside of providing food to those in need – participants who donate food at any of the Sanderson Ford locations can enter to win a 2009 Ford Flex.

The holidays are already looking a little brighter!
