GOT CITRUS?
ST. MARY'S FOOD BANK ALLIANCE LOOKS FOR A THIRD YEAR OF SWEET SUCCESS AT "SUPER CITRUS SATURDAY" COLLECTION DAY ON FEBRUARY 4
Bring Your Extra Citrus Fruit to One of Three Locations Between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to Help This Valley-Wide Gleaning Effort for a Cause
Arizona is known for its delicious citrus, but not everyone is able to enjoy these healthy treats on a regular basis. St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance is asking Valley residents to bring in any excess fruit from overflowing neighborhood trees to one of three partner locations on "Super Citrus Saturday," February 4, 2012 to share this staple with those in need this winter
For those who are able to glean their own fruit and save Food Bank resources, St. Mary's will be accepting donations at North Phoenix Baptist Church (Central Avenue and Bethany Home Road), Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ (56th Street and Lafayette), and Christ Church of the Valley (7007 West Happy Halley Road) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at all locations.
"Super Citrus Saturday" proved to be a huge success last year, bringing in almost 90,000 pounds oranges, grapefruits and lemons. This abundance of Arizona's oranges and grapefruits will allow St. Mary's to share the citrus – after it has been juiced and frozen through a partnership with Sun Orchard in Tempe with eight other Western states that in turn, share their state's abundant bounties. St. Mary's received apples from Washington, potatoes from Idaho and New Mexico, plums and nectarines from California, as well as non-perishable products in the exchange.
