John van Hengel

Founder Emeritus

Born in 1923 in Waupun, Wisconsin, John van Hengel created the concept of food banking, and founded St. Mary’s Food Bank in 1967. In 1976, van Hengel established Feeding America (formerly known as Second Harvest), an organization to help those interested in starting food banks. This network now consists of more than 200 food banks nationwide, and is the largest domestic hunger relief organization in the United States. In 1986, van Hengel established Food Banking Services, now known as the Global Food Banking Network, serving as a resource to food banks in countries worldwide. In addition he was integral in the passing of Arizona’s Good Samaritan Act, which provides legal protection from civil action to charitable and nonprofit organizations that in good faith receive and distribute without charge apparently wholesome food items or non-grocery products. John van Hengel changed the way the world looks at hunger and its relief.

Beverly Butler Damore

President and Chief Executive Officer

Beverly Butler Damore is active in the community, serving as a member of the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance Board of Directors for six years before joining the staff as Chief Communications Officer in 2008. Damore is a founding partner of the Phoenix-based corporate communications company Option II Advisors, which specializes in public relations, Web site orchestration, management consulting, community relations, fundraising, and event coordination. Previously, Damore worked for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and while there, was named Co-Interim Chief Executive Officer, while also serving as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer.

Damore’s community involvement began as a reporter for the Tribune Newspapers, where she was responsible for covering Scottsdale and Mesa City Halls; growth and development; and urban affairs. She holds a Masters of Mass Communications degree from the Arizona State University Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola Marymount University.

In addition to her board involvement with St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, she is also a founding member of the ASU Craig and Barbara Barrett Honors College Dean’s Advisory Board and served as Vice Chair of NOAH, a nonprofit organization focused on providing medical, dental, and behavioral health service to underserved populations.

Mike Hanosh

Chief Operations Officer

Mike HanoshMike Hanosh joined St. Mary’s with more than 10 years of executive level leadership in both the private and public sectors.  He has successfully led organizations in a number of different industries including manufacturing, retail, advanced technology, and insurance and financial services.  Mike has a unique blend of operations and technical experience as well as a strong focus on organizational transformation and change management.  He earned a Bachelors of Business Administration degree from Loyola Marymount University and lives in Tempe with his wife Kristi and two daughters.

Sarah Stuckey, CPA

Chief Financial Officer

Sarah Stuckey has spent the majority of her career in non-profit leadership in the Valley before joining the staff as Chief Financial Officer.  Stuckey was a founding partner of the Phoenix-based corporate communications company Option II Advisors, which specialized in interim corporate leadership, financial and operational strategy and budgeting, public relations, management consulting, conflict resolution and general business consulting. Previously, Stuckey worked for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and while there, was named co-Interim Chief Executive Officer while also serving as the organization’s Chief Financial Officer.  She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Southern Methodist University.

Lisa Goin, CFRE

Chief Development and Communications Officer

Lisa Goin joined St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance as the Chief Development Officer with nearly 20 years of fundraising experience for nonprofits in the Valley. Lisa earned the prestigious CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) designation in 2007 and has been a long-standing member of AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals). Lisa has traveled the country, training hundreds of nonprofit staff and board members in the areas of fundraising and marketing. A near-native to Arizona, Lisa lives in Scottsdale with her husband, two children, and rescued dog.

Chris Polityka

Chief People Officer

Chris Polityka, St. Mary’s Chief People Officer, is a results and customer-focused human resources leader with an outstanding record of success in developing and deploying human capital strategies, systems and processes across organizations including nonprofits, national auto sales and finance, retail, restaurant and hospitality industries.  As a trusted member of the executive leadership team and key senior advisor and business partner, Chris brings to St. Mary’s a strong HR generalist experience leading talent acquisition/management, organizational development, succession planning, learning excellence, social media and employee relations.

Chris is a Phoenix-area native and graduate of St. Thomas the Apostle grade school and Brophy College Preparatory.  Following Brophy, Chris completed his undergraduate work in Southern California at Loyola Marymount University and is currently pursuing graduate work with Penn State University.   Chris has worked in senior-level/executive HR roles in corporate America for over a decade before joining the Food Bank in March of 2012.
