The Idea: The Issues

The World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the world is well-fed, one-third is under-fed, and one-third is starving. Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger. Over 4 million people will die of starvation this year.

As of 2004, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates 37.0 million people live at or below the federal poverty line – an increase from 2003 of 1.1 million people. The current poverty rate in U.S. is 12.7 percent, or nearly 1 in 8 people. The number of children in poverty in 2004 was 13 million. And, the number of people struggling with hunger, food-insecurity and poverty in the United States continues to rise steadily.

Arizona statistics are above the national average. As Arizona’s population has grown dramatically over the last 25 years, so has the in poverty in our state. Currently, 1 in 7 Arizonans, or over 800,000 people live in poverty. By 2010, experts estimate 1 million Arizonans will live in poverty.

Simply… More people need more food!
