ST. MARY'S FOOD BANK ALLIANCE TO HOST 1st ANNUAL "SUPER CITRUS SATURDAY"
In an attempt to reach its goal of collecting a record 2.5 million pounds of produce from residential citrus trees this winter, St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance will hold its first annual "Super Citrus Saturday" on Saturday, Feb. 20 in North Central Phoenix and the Arcadia areas to give homeowners a designated drop-off spot to make their tax-deductible produce donation to the Food Bank.
A St. Mary's truck, collection bins and volunteers will be stationed in the parking lots of both the North Phoenix Baptist Church (Central Avenue and Bethany Home Road) and Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ (56th Street and Lafayette, south of Camelback) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect oranges, grapefruits, lemons and other residential citrus items.
Citrus donations are not only used to feed the hungry of Arizona, but are distributed to food banks in eight other Western states in a trade for crops in their states (potatoes, apples, onions) that come back to St. Mary's to widen the variety of available nutritious food.

The Souper Bowl Day of Caring is on February 7, 2010. This is a day for service, faith-based and school organizations to give back to the community while celebrating the football game itself.
Every penny raised on Souper Bowl Sunday is donated directly to the charity an individual group chooses, and St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance is proud to participate again this year.

CANSTRUCTION 2010 RETURNS TO FIESTA MALL FEB. 20-27
The Society for Marketing Professional Services, Arizona chapter, under the auspices of the Society for Design Administration (SDA), will host its 4th annual Canstruction competition beginning Feb. 19 at Fiesta Mall (Alma School Road and US 60) in Mesa.
Canstruction combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry. Competing teams, led by architects, engineers and contactors, showcase their talents by designing and building giant structures (10' x 10' x 8'h) made entirely out of canned foods to benefit St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance.
Teams, which will include high school and college-aged students working alongside professionals this year, have 12 hours to build their structures, which will be on display for the public to see at Fiesta Mall Feb, 20-20. The public may also cast a vote for the AIA Phoenix Metro People's Choice Award and donate canned food at the simultaneous food drive.
Other awards will be given for Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity and Jurors' Favorite by a panel of judges. Winners from local competitions around the nation will compete in the national Canstruction competition through a slide photography submission. At the close of the exhibition, all of the canned food used to create the structures will be donated to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance.

HELP ST. MARY'S TEE OFF ON HUNGER DURING BIRDIES FOR BUCKS
Help earn big bucks for St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance by making a pledge in the Birdies for Charity competition at the 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Simply pledge as little as one penny for every birdie that is made during by the PGA pros during the four rounds of the tournament at the TPC of Scottsdale from Feb. 25-28. It is estimated that between 1,500 and 1,800 birdies will be carded during the tournament, although inclement weather may hold the final totals down.
If your pledge is one penny per birdie and 1,500 are made, your donation to the Food Bank would be $15. You will receive an invoice from Thunderbirds Charities for your donation amount, and they will make sure you pledge winds up with the St. Mary's total.
Thunderbirds Charities will add a 10 percent bonus to the total amount of pledges raised to SMFBA, meaning your donation will be worth even more to the Food Bank. For more information on the program, visit www.birdiesforcharityarizona.com. Pledge deadline is Feb. 28, so step up and slice out hunger with your donation today.
9TH ANNUAL KIDS CAFE OPEN SET FOR APRIL 16 AT WIGWAM RESORT
In the last eight years, proceeds from the Albertson's Kids Cafe Open have provided nearly half a million meals to children at risk of hunger, in addition to providing an enjoyable day of golf at the beautiful Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa (300 E. Wigwam Blvd) in Litchfield Park.
All golfers will be treated to lunch, beverages, goodie bags and tournament shirts. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, longest drive and accuracy, closest-to-the-pin and Hole-In-One.
But the big winners are the children of Arizona, many of whom would not know where their next meal would come from without programs from St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance.
The ninth annual event tees off Friday, April 16 and there are still spots open for both players ($200 per player or $800 per foursome) and sponsors at the Eagle ($10,000), Birdie ($5,000), Par ($2,000) and Tee ($1,000) levels. PLEDGE WEIGHT LOSS TO "THE BIGGEST LOSER" TO HELP ST. MARY'S
For the second year in a row, St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, NBC's The Biggest Loser, General Mills, Subway, 24 Hour Fitness and Feeding America are partnering on the "Pound For Pound Challenge", a program that encourages those around Arizona and across the country to lose weight nationally to help provide hunger relief locally.
For every pound of weight participants pledge to lose locally, a pound of groceries will be delivered to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance. St. Mary's challengers lost a total of 36,866 pounds in the 2009 challenge. The goal for the 2010 challenge is to surpass that mark.
To join the Challenge, people can visit www.PFPChallenge.com or www.BiggestLoser.com and enter their weight loss goals. For every pound of weight participants pledge to lose, the Pound For Pound Challenge will donate 14 cents to Feeding America - enough to deliver one pound of groceries to a local food bank - up to a maximum donation of $800,000. Pledges will be accepted until June 30. |
