All the fun happens Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the Marriott Courtyard Happy Valley (2029 W. Whispering Wind Drive, south of Happy Valley Road on 19th Avenue). Last year's event raised more than 17,000 meals for the hungry of Arizona and an even bigger total is expected this year. For more information, contact Anne Niemiec at the Courtyard/Happy Valley at (623) 580-8844.
Calling All High Schools! Still Time to Join 4th Annual National Student Food Drive
The fourth annual National Student Food Drive kicks off in October, with high schools from around the Valley looking to dethrone the three-time champions from Mountain Ridge High School and claim the coveted John van Hengel Memorial Cup for collecting the most food and cash donations.
St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance has a list of committed and active sponsors for this year's event, including US Airways, Harkins Theatres, the Phoenix Coyotes, Sara Lee, KPHO (Channel 5) and KEZ-FM (99.9). The drive will be preceded by a Kickoff Party information session on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. in the Community Room of the Food Bank's University of Phoenix Program Center (3003 W. Thomas) where student representatives and faculty advisors will enjoy refreshments, receive their official food drive T-shirts and ideas on how to creatively increase donations.
Schools can win a live KEZ radio remote at their school (schools must attend the Kickoff Party to be eligible) with food from Sara Lee and drinks provided. The winning school will earn use of a 250-seat Harkins Theatre in their area and access to a first-run movie - allowing that school to sell tickets to benefit any other fundraising effort for their the school.
There is still time for clubs, service organizations, student governments, or even a single homeroom, to represent their school and take on the challenge of helping to feed the hungry in Arizona. Collecting food and donations at a Friday night football game, afternoon pep rally, weekend car wash or class-against-class competition are just some of the ways to get the whole school and parent involved.
